In early 1977, members of the Newfoundland Club of America, living in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Florida, were contacted by Beverly Hyatt to see what interest existed in forming a regional Newfoundland Club.
The first organizational meeting was held in Atlanta, GA on October 15, 1977. At this time the name of the club was selected, an area to be covered was settled upon and a committee was chosen to establish the club’s constitution and by-laws. It was also decided that SENC would attempt to have four meetings per year: two meetings in conjunction with the Atlanta Kennel Club shows in the spring and fall, and two meetings in conjunction with the Piedmont Kennel Club shows in the winter and summer. This was revised in 1985 to two meetings per year - one to be held in Atlanta, GA in the fall and one in Greenville, S.C. in the winter.
The second organizational meeting was held on February 18, 1978, in Greenville, SC. The constitution and by-laws were ready to be sent to Fran Dibble for approval by the Newfoundland Club of America. An election was held and the first Officers for SENC were:
President – Jim Farkas; Vice-President – Jack Hyatt; Secretary – Beverly Hyatt; Treasurer – Jim Slaughter
The Board of Directors were: Doug Wilson, Wilma Lister, Ronnie Farkas and Margaret Ann Skelton.
On April 14, 1978 a contest was held to name the newsletter for the newly formed club. The winning entry was submitted by Jean Slaughter and “Newfangled News” was born; Beverly Hyatt was the first SENC newsletter editor.
On April 15, 1978, SENC held its first Fun Match.
SENC had its first Supported Entry in May, 1978 with the Kennesaw (GA) Kennel Club show. The first edition of “Newfangled News” also came out.
On July 1, 1978, the Newfoundland Club of America recognized SENC as a regional club.
SENC’s first club logo was designed by Consie Powell in 1982 and was redesigned by Denise Nelson in 1991.
The current SENC, Inc. Constitution and By-Laws were adopted February 16, 2008 by the voting club members at the annual meeting.
SENC hosted its first Regional Specialty in February, 1978 in conjunction with the Piedmont Kennel Club (Charlotte, NC) and Atlanta (GA) Kennel Club show’s Combined Specialties. SENC’s second Regional Specialty was held in October, 1986, in conjunction with the Combined Specialties of Atlanta (GA) and our third was held on November 20, 2004 in Concord, NC in conjunction with the Greater Monroe (NC) Kennel Club.
On November 29, 1986, SENC held its first Draft test in Raleigh, NC.
In 1994, Florida separated from SENC to form NewFla, its own Regional club.
Five members of SENC, Inc. have been or are now an officer or board member of the Newfoundland Club of America: Pat Randall, Beverly Eichel, Jack Hyatt, Tom McGill, and Roger Powell.
