What attracted you to the newfoundland breed? I had a sheepdog named Chumley while living on Long Island and when I took him to training I saw this big black dog that kept growing and growing and growing quickly becoming bigger than my sheepdog. I introduced myself to the owner who said that he was a Newfoundland dog. I bought a magnet of a Newfoundland and kept it on my refrigerator for 9 years never wanting to get another dog for fear Chumley would be broken hearted. I moved to OH in 1990 with Chumley and little did I know that my friend had been researching the breed and had found a breeder of Newfoundlands in Ohio - Teddy Tugs, Breeder Cheryl Cettomai. Well, I was surprised at Christmas when my friend drove me to the middle of nowhere in OH where my first Newfoundland puppy was awaiting my arrival. I crawled on the ground with the puppy and cried uncontrollably. Cheryl didn't know if I was happy or really didn't want the puppy. It was many mixed emotions on the ride home. The puppy wasn't old enough to be placed in a home yet but, I did decide to take one of her puppies. I named the puppy Bentley and he antagonized Chumley for 6 months of his life when Chumley had passed away. Very brokenhearted but was happy to have the puppy to drown out the sorrow of losing Chumley. Bently became my new love, my first Newfoundland. Today, 34 years later I am on our 9th Newfoundland dog. Once a Newfi owner, always a Newfi owner. Today we have our first Landseer(all others ere black) Newfoundland puppy, Barnaby, who will be one year of age on Father's Day. And, Cheryl became my best friend over 34 years!!
What areas of sport/competition interest you? Therapy
Do you handle your own dog? Never
Have you earned titles with your dog/s? Tell us about them? Just one -Blackstone's Haleigh's Comet. Best of Group and Best of Breed.
Do you remember the first time you met a newfoundland? Yes, in training class with my sheepdog Chumley.
Do you allow your dogs on your bed or furniture? Only one on the bed - Haleigh. And Baxter, our current Blackstrap Landseer puppy is allowed to "gently" jump up with his paws on both sides of me on our chairs with me and despite my not wanting Barnaby on the furniture, my husband will allow Barnaby on the sofa with him sometimes!
Do you groom your own dog? No
How to often do you trim your dog's nails? Do you or someone else trim the nails and how do they do it? Barnaby is groomed professionally every 3 weeks and they do his nail (dremel).
Tell us something cute or sweet that your newf does? Jumps up in the air uncontrollably like a bucking bronco after he goes potty and drags me around by the leash like a feather. He is 145 pounds and I am 110 pounds so I have no choice but to act as crazy as him. He just did this the other day when we stopped at a rest area driving back from OH. The people in the drive thru line at McDonalds were laughing hysterically and one woman was even video taping us!
How has the newfoundland dog impacted your life? Do you have a fond memory that you would like to share? In 2008, my Newfoundland Haleigh woke me up at 2:30 a.m. She very rarely came upstairs to do this so I figured she had to go potty. I took her outside and she then followed me upstairs again. As I took my glasses off to place them on the nightstand, Haleigh jumped up and broke my nose! I, at the time, was working as a healthcare consultant for a Plastic surgery group at UH. The one surgeon specializing in nose surgeries sent me for a nasal scan and told me to come to the office after the scan. My husband went with me and the doctor explained how I would need to be intubated under general anesthesia to have the surgery performed but had to wait until the swelling went down. Then, he proceeded to show me the other finding on the scan - a 4.5" brain tumor! Talk about taking the wind right out of your sails, I became hysterical and was in total disbelief for I never had any symptoms. Coincidentally, my husband Wolfgang, also a healthcare consultant, was working for a group of neurosurgeons at the Cleveland Clinic. He called one of them that evening and the doctor said, oh don't worry, it's probably a meningioma and is benign but, bring your wife in to see me tomorrow after she gets an MRI of her brain. Sure enough, the doctor was right and I was then scheduled for my nose surgery followed by brain surgery. After the surgery I was unable to go back to work for I had short term memory loss and processing difficulties BUT, I was alive thanks to my little guardian angel, Haleigh. If she hadn't broken my nose, I could have passed out while driving or who knows what other disaster could have happened. Subsequently, I have learned that dogs are trained to differentiate between patients with benign tumors versus those with malignant tumors.
Tell us your biggest Newfoundland brag? Haleigh saving my life as noted above.
